Elizabeth Alessi went home to be with her Lord on Father’s Day June 18, 2012 at age 90. She was born in an Irish neighborhood in Manhattan’s upper west side to Mary and Michael O’Brien who named her Ita Elizabeth on August 26, 1921. She was raised at Holy Angels Orphanage until her graduation from High School in 1939. She began working immediately and met her husband Charles Alessi of 48 years at Roseland Ballroom in New York City. They were married in 1947 and lived in Hoboken, NJ with Charles son Roger until Eileen and Phillip were born in 1949 and 1951. The family moved to Galloway Township in 1956 and built a house on property owned by grandpa Alessi since 1907. Elizabeth worked all her life until her retirement from Stockton State College in 1982. She was called Betty by her friends.
She was called mom by her children and their spouses Eileen and Bill Daniels of Lower Bank, Phil and Ruthann Alessi of Valparaiso, IN, and Charles and Jean Alessi of Westlake, CA. She was called Nanny by her grandchildren Shereen and Dan Haines, Chris Alessi, Jeremy and Mandy Alessi, Elizabeth Alessi, Sarah and Joshua Sepulveda, Ronald Alessi, Sande and Dirk Craft, and Jennifer Alessi. She had nine great grandchildren Ainsley and Kaylee, Christianna, Sylvie, Gracie, littlest Gloria, Adam, Shay, and Kai. Elizabeth’s10th great grandchild will be born in November.
She was a founding member of Beacon Church began by her son and daughter in law Phil and Ruthann Alessi in 1981. Her memorial service was held at Adams Perfect Funeral Home in Northfield and she was laid to rest at Port Republic cemetery on June 20th, 2012.
