George Howard Jackson II of Absecon New Jersey passed away December 29 at the South Jersey Medical Center Vineland New Jersey. Howard was born to George Howard Jackson and Katy Hartman Jackson in Atlantic City, New Jersey August 8, 1921. He attended Pleasantville High School where he was an athlete and played the clarinet in the band. He had a love of music and a gifted at playing the clarinet, saxophone, piano and five-string banjo. He enlisted in the United States Navy where he studied radio communications at the University of Chicago and served in the Atlantic on a Submarine Chaser during World War II. He was stationed in Cuba where he loved the culture and people and learned to speak Spanish fluently. Through the Navy, he was awarded a full scholarship to Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut where he studied electrical engineering and industrial psychology. He was a competitive boxer on the team at Yale. He also did graduate studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He was a personnel director at Atlantic City Electric Company. He did consulting work, teaching and was a gifted writer. He love studying etymology as a hobby and collected antique dictionaries and books. Howard was a pioneer environmentalist and naturalist. He was a strong supporter of Green Peace and an educator in conservation. He cherished his beautiful dock he constructed himself on the creek in Absecon and the surrounding salt marsh. He was an expert in local wildlife and especially loved studying native and wild plants in this area. He was a strong animal advocate and cherished his horses, dogs and cats. He is predeceased by his wife Patricia and sister Kathryn Cibos. He will be terribly missed by his children Cindy Erickson of Mays Landing, New Jersey; Diane Sablan of Okeechobee, Florida and George Howard III of Petersburg, New Jersey; his grandchildren Eric and Maria Fleming of Yuma Arizona, Lauren Fleming and Keith Hann of Mullica, New Jersey; Steven Fleming of Mays Landing, New Jersey; Noel Smith of Egg Harbor Township; Mariah Sablan of Florida, Joshua and Lyndsey Jackson of Petersburg, New Jersey; his great granddaughters Meredith and Madeleine Fleming of Yuma Arizona; his beloved nieces Katy Collins and Debra Calderwood; and much more extended family and friends, as well as his cherished dog “Morgan”. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at 1pm at the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery, Estell Manor.
