Wilkins Sr, Alfred J (Joe) 76 of Galloway, died Wednesday, March 12 surrounded by his wife and children. Born April 3, 1937 in Atlantic City, Joe was the oldest son of the late Alfred and Helen (Farrell) Wilkins. He was a livelong resident of Atlantic County. He graduated from Holy Spirit High School in 1955, where he earned 3 Varsity letters in football and was named to the Atlantic County All Star Team. Upon graduating high school, he attended Wake Forest on a football scholarship but returned home and joined Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 322 (formerly Local 121), where he worked his way up through the union ranks culminating as Business Agent and then as Business Manager. He retired from Local 322 after 46 years of service. In addition to his role with Local 322, Joe served as Secretary Treasurer for the SJ Building Trades and Vice President of the NJ State Association of Pipe Trades. Joe played a key role in the development of organized labor for over 50 years at both the local and national level. Joe also served in other capacities for both the people of Pleasantville and the state of NJ. He was elected to City Council for the City of Pleasantville where he served for 12 years including the last 9 years as City Council President. Joe also served the state of NJ in a number of positions including Treasurer of CRDA and was appointed by the governor as Assistant Commissioner of Labor for the state of NJ upon his retirement from Local 322 in 2002. Affectionately known as “Pop”, he is survived by his wife Kathleen (McGurk/Marczyk) and his 7 loving children; Joe (Kathleen), Michael (Roseanna), Beth Santini (Joe), Patty (Dennis) Vespe, Susan (Reid) Woodward, Stephen (Kelli), Gail (Colin) Heneghan. His step children Kathy (Jeff) Wyvil, Dr. Stanley (Mara) Marczyk, Mary Marczyk, Joseph (Kathleen) Marczyk, Ann (Ted) Shober, Peter (Anna) Marczyk, Fred (Megan) Marczyk, Bernie (Keely) Marczyk. Pop is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter, and 24 step-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 41 years, Gail(Vance), brothers John and James and his grandson Sean. Pop’s favorite activities include watching Red Sox Baseball to all hours of the night and attending his grandchildren’s and step grandchildren’s athletic sporting events. He was an avid supporter of Holy Spirit High School and was elected into their Hall of Fame in 2002. The Catholic Church played a large role in the life of Joe and his family. He was parishioner of St. Peter’s Church for over 40 years and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton for the past 4 years. Visitation services will be held from 6pm until 8pm Friday, March 14th, 2014 at Adams Perfect Funeral Home. 1650 New Rd (Rt. 9) Northfield NJ. A funeral mass will be offered at 11am on March 15th with a visitation beginning at 9am till 1045am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, 591 New Jersey Ave. Absecon, NJ. Burial will be at Laurel Memorial Park Pomona, NJ. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation in Joe’s name to either Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation (www.bacharach.org) or Emilie House, PO Box 7027 Penndel PA 19047.
