John Harkins

John “Jack” Joseph Harkins, Jr. of West Atlantic City, passed away at home on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at the age of 86. Jack was born on November 9, 1927 in Philadelphia to John and Marie Harkins. Jack lived most of his life in South Jersey. After graduating from Millville High School, he joined the United States Merchant Marines and proudly served his country during World War II in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean Middle East War Zone. After retiring from Operating Engineers Local 825, Jack continued to enjoy boating, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. Jack was predeceased by his son, John and wife, Dorothy. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his daughter Diane and son-in-law Dr. Robert Miller, son James and daughter-in-law Ruth; brother Hugh and sister-in-law Doris; and niece Joan and her husband Dennis Miller. He is also survived by his great-nephew, Joe (Michele) Kleinow and great-niece Lisa (Travis) Lincoln. He will be greatly missed by his caregivers, Debbie and Olga. A special thank you to Holy Redeemer Hospice for their loving care and support. A visitation will be held onFriday, May 30, 2014 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Saint Gianna Beretta Molla Parish / Saint Bernadette, 1421 New Road, Northfield, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial will be held immediately following the visitation. Burial will be at Port Republic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack’s memory to The Charity League of Atlantic County, C/O 617 Lexington Court, Linwood, NJ 08221.
