Edwin Ward

Edwin F. Ward, 92, formerly of Northfield, died peacefully surrounded by his family on October 4, 2012 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Galloway where he had resided for the last four years.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, he lived in Trenton until moving to Northfield in 1969. Mr. Ward served in the Army in World War II and was stationed in India. Prior to deployment, he was the short-stop on the Fort Dix team that played exhibition games against Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics and some of the American League’s great players of the 1940’s. A graduate of Rider University, Mr. Ward was an accountant and comptroller at Trenton Junior College before relocating with his family to Northfield to become one of the original administrators at the then Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. He retired in 1985 as the Director of Purchasing.

Ed was a gentleman of great wisdom and quick wit. His greatest love and pride was his family, especially his wife of 68 years, Eileen, who died on July 29, 2012.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Ward was predeceased by his parents, Sara and John Ward; his brother, John; and his sister, Emily Burke.

Mr. Ward was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Bernadette’s Church and a member of the Senior Citizens Group. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Assembly 662 of Somers Point, American Legion Post 0295 of Northfield, the Northfield Republican Club, and he served on the Northfield Planning Board.

He leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Dr. Michael (and Sally) Ward of Bordentown, NJ, and Edwin (and Carolyn) of Westlake Village, CA; and four daughters, Dorothy (and Tom) Toth of Langhorne, PA, Susan Ward of Margate, Eileen Ward of Marmora, and Ellen Ward of Marmora. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Dr. Susan (and Alex) D’Andrea of Yardley, PA, Dr. Michael (and Megan) Ward of Westchester, PA, Timothy (and Ali) Ward of Robbinsville, NJ, Christopher Ward of Bordentown, NJ, and Rachel Slaughter of Marmora; and two step granddaughters, Meghan Toth of Clinton, NJ and Erin Toth of Hamilton, NJ. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Livi and Laini Ward of Westchester, PA. Mr. Ward also leaves behind his sister, Mary Nattress of Morton, PA and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at 11:00am at St. Gianna Beretta Molla Parish/St. Bernadette Church, 1421 New Road, Northfield. A visitation will be held from 10:00am until the time of Mass. Entombment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Special Olympics of New Jersey, 3 Princess Rd, Lawrence Township, NJ 08648.
